Exercise for Wellness

Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) is a peak national body, and in May 2018 they called for best practice cancer care for all cancer patients to include the following.

  • Exercise is to be embedded as part of standard practice in cancer care and to be viewed as an adjunct therapy that helps counteract the adverse effects of cancer and its treatment
  • Exercise recommendations should be tailored to the individual’s abilities noting that specific exercise programming adaptations may be required for people with cancer based on disease and treatment-related adverse effects, anticipated disease trajectory and their health status.
  • Exercise guidelines include 150 min per week of moderate intensity exercise and 2-3 resistance exercise sessions targeting major muscle groups

Exercise for Wellness for cancer patients

Mater Health and Wellness offers an exercise prescription service for all cancer patients, before during and following cancer care. Mater Health and Wellness has physiotherapists available who are experienced in cancer care and exercise prescription.

What we offer?

  • Recommend four consultations including an individually assessed and prescribed exercise program and at least two sessions to monitor and progress or adapt your exercise progress. Many patients can access this service with no out of pocket expense  if they use Medicare  Chronic Disease Management Plan (Referral from a GP required)
  • We work closely with a nearby gym in Annerley Road if patients would like their exercise program to be provided as a safe gym based program. Clients may choose to carry out their program at a gym of their choice or may become a member at this gym at a reduced price
  • We can prescribe a home-based exercise program for those who are not interested in attending a gym facility
  • Group exercise classes will be available with a maximum of six per class at an additional cost for those who would like the benefit of being socially connected with likeminded others and working closely with a caring and motivating physiotherapist
