Mater helps children get set to enter prep and year one

Starting school can be an exciting but stressful time for parents and children.

For some children it may be the first time that they have been away from their parents; entering an unfamiliar environment with new people and participating in a range of new activities.

To help ease this transition, Mater Health and Wellness has developed a program - Getting Set for Prep/School - designed to provide parents and teachers with more information to assist them determine if their child is ready to begin Prep or Year One.

“These sessions can identify a child’s strengths as well as highlight the areas in which they may be struggling; thereby giving them a chance to develop and learn new strategies before the school year begins.” Occupational Therapist Lynda Harbison said.

“Families are often unsure of where their child is at developmentally and we hope to be able to reassure them if their child has the key skills required for their new learning adventure.”

Specialist paediatric occupational therapists and speech pathologists will provide a co-ordinated approach to identify your child’s readiness for the school environment.

Developmental milestones including pre-literacy and literacy skills, comprehension, language, speech, attention, motor control, pencil skills, visual perception, social and play skills are assessed.

Parents will receive a feedback pack including any necessary recommendations.

Ongoing developmental paediatric services are offered at an additional cost, if further therapy is required.

The assessment costs $440.  Mater Health and wellness is a recognised provider with private health funds and Medicare.  Rebates for services are available where applicable.

The Getting Set for Prep/School Program is located on Level 3, Salmon Building, 535 Stanley Street South Brisbane.
