Stress management

An admission to hospital, or managing ongoing health problems, can be a very stressful experience. Additionally, some hospital procedures and the busy environment can cause distress.

Stress can interfere with the ability to feel safe and carry out chosen tasks in the day, such as taking in new information, making decisions, creating a routine, sleeping, communicating with family and healing.

Occupational therapists assist patients and carers to reduce the negative impact of this stress through the use of a variety of treatment approaches such as:

  • relaxation and mindfulness
  • use of sensory modulation
  • acceptance and commitment therapy
  • meaningful/therapeutic activity.
